My teaching experiences
Teaching Spanish and English abroad made me realize how important is multicultural sensibility and meeting all students needs
Introduction
It would be no exaggeration to say that teaching abroad is one of my best life experiences. I worked for approximately three years in Turkey teaching Spanish and English, almost one year in Australia and I am currently working in the UK as a Class Teacher Assistant in an outstanding Catholic primary school called Our Lady of Grace or OLOG.
In all these years of teaching, I have observed many cultural differences in all the places I worked. Differences in aspects such as educational standards, settings, and regulations. I have also witnessed how cultural sensibility plays a key role in teaching as every individual has their own representations of the world. And therefore, cultural diversity is extremely important while teaching languages, because teachers must consider during their lesson planning all student’s needs widely.
Besides, it is worthy to point out that cultural sensibility and having the students at the center of all kinds of learning leads teachers to meet high teaching standards, and when all student’s needs are met satisfactorily, is when true learning happens.

At OLOG in London
I currently work as a part of a class team to provide tailored learning activities for pupils in year 3 at ‘Our Lady of Grace Catholic Primary School’. Some of my responsibilities are including, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the delivery of curricular activities to promote pupil engagement.
- Monitoring pupils’ achievements and completing progress.
- Delivering interventions for children who need extra support in different areas of learning and development including children with special needs.
- Promoting inclusion, modeling positive behaviors, and encouraging independence as well as providing break time supervision.

I worked as a Spanish Teacher. Some of my responsibilities included:
- Teaching Spanish within the guidelines established by the school curriculum.
- Maintaining a record of attendance.
- Teaching fifteen different student groups with a maximum of 20 students, from kindergarten up to KS3.
- Using a wide variety of strategies to teach Spanish and English to all students in an effective way.
- Working cooperatively with other teachers from the language department in developing and sharing strategies to support students' learning in different settings.
- Participating in all staff and language department meetings.
- Maintaining accurate records and grades for all students.
- Ensuring effective and positive parent communication.
- Organizing co-curricular clubs and activities to complement Spanish language acquisition and learning.
- Creating visual aids, games, flashcards, and all co-curricular clubs’ materials.
- Creating eye-catching, interactive displays to showcase all pupils' learning and achievements.

At Yenişehir Merkez Koleji in Turkey
I taught Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish/English) within EYFS and KS1 for almost two years and mainly focused all my efforts on:
- Teaching Spanish as a second language to young children at nursery and primary levels and assisted English learning.
- Motivating pupils, encouraging learning through different experiences.
- Encouraged students to love Spanish and its culture, as well as the English one.
- Designing and preparing resources and activities to learn Spanish.
- Establishing a 40-minute storytelling time divided into 2 sessions of 20 minutes each once a week.
- Introducing the basics of reading and writing in Spanish for the primary students.
- Promoting good behavior by addressing conflicts promptly in line with school policy.
- Supervising students at break and mealtimes as well as on trips and school journeys.
At El Patio Spanish Language Centre in Australia
At a very early stage in my teaching career, I worked as a Spanish tutor for a bit more than six months, I led to level 1 and level 2 Spanish lessons, mainly responsible for vocabulary and pronunciation classes. Additionally, joined to support a qualified teacher in the solid grammar course called verb workshop and had a chance to create my own class materials to embrace and improve the process of how to speak Spanish with confidence.
My tasks were including, but were not limited to:
- Teaching regular, irregular, and reflexive words.
- Improving understanding of the daily conversation.
- Spelling classes, media classes, travel classes.
- Supporting a deep understanding of the whole scheme of presente indicativo.
- Creating, adding, updating, and editing Practice/Listening exercises.
- Designing pair work such as action items (daily routines, completed actions, expressing excited moments) on all levels. It included simple daily conversations such as telling the time, numbers, food, drinks as well as talking about countries where Spanish is spoken, expressing agreements/disagreements for a given task/scenario.
